How to Do Laundry

Laundry is a simple task. Modern textiles, detergents, and machines remove most of the mystery and errors. Follow these fundamental actions for clean laundry today and tomorrow.

But first, decide if your clothing actually needs to be washed. Follow these laundry techniques to save time and money.

How to Do Laundry

1: Label Reading

Check your clothing and linen care labels. They can inform you if anything can be machine washed. The way a cloth reacts to heat, water, and cleaning agents vary by fabric type.

  • Cotton Fabric Care
  • Synthetic Fabric Care
  • Wool Fabrics Care

There’s no need to risk ruining delicate materials by washing them to save time or money. Avoid buying delicate products if you don’t want to bother with specific laundry care.

2: Sort

Sort the washing by color: Coloured prints with a white background will be grouped together. Dispose of dark-colored garments in another pile. Wash heavily dirty garments separately.

3: Re-sort

Sort each pile again by fabric type. Sort towels and sheets from clothing in the whites pile. T-shirts and pants in dark hues are separated from blouses and dress shirts.

Washing and drying by fabric type allow for varying water temperatures. Never wash lint-producing materials with lint-attracted fabrics!
If you are in a rush and don’t have enough of one cloth to fill a complete washer load, you can wash all colors together. Choose the gentlest cycle for your delicates.

4: Pick Detergent
Choose a multi-purpose detergent. The amount to utilize depends on the size of the load. Pre-treat stains before washing to prevent set-in. Apply stain remover or laundry detergent.

Before loading the washing, add the detergent. No residue on your clothes.

5: Choose a Water Temperature

Unless your clothes are caked in mud and significantly discolored, washing in cold water will suffice.

To remove body oil from cotton underwear and linens, use hot water. To sanitize bed linens and towels, wash them at the maximum suggested temperature every other wash.

Choose the appropriate wash cycle for the materials in the load. For most loads, “normal” is fine, but for particular fabrics, “permanent press” or “delicate” may be required. Heavy-duty work well on jeans and towels.

6: Check-up

Before you start the washer, double-check everything. This will prevent last-minute mistakes.

Pretreat any stains you find. Some stains require particular methods to remove, while others can be treated with a spot treatment. There’s also a method for mysterious stains that you can’t identify.

To avoid mishaps, make sure all pockets are empty of tissues and paper. Remove belts and jewelry. Close all zippers, VELCRO, and buttons to avoid fabric catching.

7: Washer Load

Load items one at a time into the washing, avoiding a wad. Don’t overfill the washer. The clothing needs space in the water.

Turn knits, corduroy, textured fabrics, and dark colors inside out to maintain fabric finishes and avoid fading.

7: Washer Unload

Remove wet laundry from the machine quickly to avoid wrinkles and mildew. Dry objects by hanging, laying flat, or drying in the dryer.

9: Dryer Load

Make sure to sort loads by fabric type before putting them in the dryer. Dry all lightweight things first, then heavy fabric items, using the appropriate dryer cycle for each. This prevents shrinkage and protects your clothes.

There are several reasons to line dry your laundry. Among them are saving electricity (and money) and reducing clothing damage. But, due to space and weather constraints, not everyone can. If you can, learn how to hang clothing on a line.

10: Fold and Store

When your clothing is dry, take care of them immediately away. After drying, hang or fold each piece to avoid wrinkles. And iron if you must. Return clothes and linens as soon as possible.

Laundry is less stressful if done frequently. A mountain of dirty laundry might be frightening. Taking the opportunity to read, relax, and enjoy the aroma of clean laundry can make the trip more enjoyable.
